Star of Star Trek, Reading Rainbow and Roots explores innovation, creativity

(MINNEAPOLIS) — LeVar Burton – an educator, director, and actor best known for his roles in Reading Rainbow, Roots and Star Trek – will share with the public and the Augsburg community the importance of turning STEM into STE(A)M when he speaks at the College on February 13, 2016, as part of Scholarship Weekend.

Burton will talk about compelling reasons for integrating science, technology, engineering and math with the arts and design in his presentation “You can be anything: The importance of education, innovation, and creativity.”

Every spring, Augsburg College welcomes the best and brightest prospective Auggies to participate in Scholarship Weekend. These students participate in a range of activities, connect with faculty and current students, compete for top scholarships, and hear from inspiring leaders. Levar Burton’s appearance follows on successful visits in previous years of his holiness the Dalai Lama and Bill Nye the “Science Guy.”

Bill Nye “The Science Guy” will share his love for science when he speaks February 14 at Augsburg College’s Scholarship Weekend in an address that is open to the general public. Nye, who will talk about “How Science Can Save the World,” will speak with academic depth and humor about planetary science, climate change, evolution, environmental awareness, and more.

“We’re excited to host Bill Nye during our Scholarship Weekend when bright students from across the United States visit campus to compete for our top academic scholarships,” said Augsburg College President Paul Pribbenow. “We want to give these scholarly, prospective Auggies the chance to grapple with some of the world’s deepest questions so they can experience what Auggies are called to do each and every day.”

During the 2014 Scholarship Weekend, nearly 100 students and the public had the opportunity to be challenged by deep questions of compassion and humanity posed in a talk by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

Nye, a mechanical engineer and seven-time Emmy Award winner as host and head writer of “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” will speak from 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m., Feb. 14, in Augsburg College’s Si Melby Gymnasium.

Ticket Information:Ticket information will be made available as soon it is finalized. Members of the Augsburg College community will have the opportunity to purchase tickets during a presale and that will be announced via A-mail as soon as details are available. Following the presale, tickets will be made available to the general public.

Biography: Bill Nye is a mechanical engineer who wants the world to know and appreciate the passion, beauty, and joy (the P, B & J) of science. Nye’s show, Bill Nye The Science Guy, has garnered 18 Emmy awards. Nye won seven of them as host and head writer. These days, Nye travels the globe exhorting audiences to change the world. He has a day job as the CEO of The Planetary Society, the world’s largest non-governmental space interest organization. Nye’s newest book, “Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation,” is slated for release in November.

MINNEAPOLIS – The 26th annual – a conference that celebrates Nobel PeacePrize laureates, international and national leaders – continues March 7-9 in Minneapolis. The Forum, which explores issues related to business, arts, music, education, and global issues, kicked off on March 1 with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

March 7 – Law and Business Day.Keynote presentations, that include a moderated discussion, are:

  • 9-10:30 a.m.: Michael Posner, professor of business and society at New York University, will discuss human rights protections in global business operations and the manufacturing supply chain, extractive industries, and the information and technology sector.
  • 3:30-5 p.m.: Ian Bremmer, founder and president of Eurasia Group, a global political risk research and consulting firm, will talk about how global political risk impacts political developments and national security dynamics throughout the globe.

March 8 – Science and Health Day.Keynote presentations, that include a moderated discussion, are:

  • 9-10:30 a.m.: Dr. Deane Marchbein of the Peace Prize-Winning Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres and who will talk about the impartial, international medical work of the organization.
  • 3:30-5 p.m.: Dr. William Foege, best known for his work to eradicate smallpox during the 1970s and who has served as Director of the Centers for Disease Control, will talk about global health and its impacts on peace, and epidemiological tools for studying peace.
  • 7-9 p.m.: Mason Jennings is the featured musical guest. The nationally acclaimed singer-songwriter will explore the intersections of peace and creative expression.

March 9 – Global Day.Keynote presentations, that include a moderated discussion, are:

  • 12-1:30 p.m.: The value and success of the Nobel Peace Prize will be debated by Geir Lundestad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute which awards the Prize, and Jay Nordlinger, editor of the National Review.
  • 4:15-5:45 p.m.: 2011 Peace Prize Laureate Leymah Gbowee, the Liberian peace and women’s rights activist who founded Liberian Mass Action for Peace to support women during times of war and who inspired the documentary Pray the Devil Back to Hell, will talk about her work in nonviolent struggle.

All keynote presentations, except Jennings, are at Ted Mann Concert Hall at the University of Minnesota. Jennings will present in the intimate setting of Augsburg College’s Hoversten Chapel. Tickets at .

The NPPF is a premier international event designed to inspire peacemaking. Now in its 26th year, the Forum celebrates the work of Peace Prize Laureates and deeply explores questions of peace and conflict. This year’s Forum addresses issues in law and business, health and science, and global issues. The program is housed and coordinated by Augsburg College in partnership with the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the School of Public Health, and the five Norwegian Lutheran colleges of Augsburg, Augustana College (Sioux Falls, SD), Concordia College (Moorhead), Luther College (Decorah, IA) and St. Olaf College (Northfield). Event 1: Nobel Peace Prize Forum Keynote Address

  • Description:His Holiness the 14thDalai Lama will deliver the keynote speech at the 26th Nobel Peace Prize Forum at the Minneapolis Convention Center. His Holiness, the spiritual leader of Tibetans and Buddhists worldwide, will speak on topics of faith, peace, and human values. The speech will be delivered in English. The NPPF is housed and coordinated by Augsburg College.
  • Media Advisory:Read and print the media advisoryhere.
  • Media Credentialing:Credentialing closed on Wednesday, February 19. Only members of the media who received notice of official credential approval will be permitted entrance.A photo ID will be required to pick up credentials. Please also wear or bring the credentials issued by your employer.Confirmations and additional information will be emailed to editors, reporters, and photographers who receive credentials.If you do not receive a correspondence from Augsburg College by February 26 for this event, you were not approved for credentials. Credentials are not transferrable.

Event 2: Historic Tibetan New Year/Losar

  • Description:His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will preside over the Tibetan New Year/Losar ceremony being held in Augsburg College’s Kennedy Center. It is the first time in the life of His Holiness, since exile, that he will observe Losar outside of India. The event is being held by the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota.
