Atlese Robinson ’15 awarded Hawkinson Foundation Scholarship

The Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation for Peace & Justice has awarded Augsburg studentÌýAtlese Robinson ’15 the 2014ÌýHawkinson Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship was created by the Foundation to encourage students who have already demonstrated a commitment to peace and justice to strive for those valuesÌýin their educational pursuits and in their personal and professional lives.

RobinsonÌýis majoring in theater at Augsburg. HerÌýartistic background includes the Penumbra Theatre’s Summer Institute and the St. Paul Central High School’s Central Touring Theatre. When she was attending Central, RobinsonÌýwrote a poem highlighting racial inequalities within the school system. She then went on to perform the poem, with others, for groups of teachers and administration in the St. Paul Public Schools.

Robinson has served as editor of The Echo newspaper, a student publicationÌýat Augsburg College. She also has performed her original spoken word as part of the College’sÌýDr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation celebration.

Star Tribune features Augsburg College’s City Service Day

The Star Tribune featured Augsburg’s annual City Service Day, an opportunity in which members of the College community venture off campus to complete service work in Minneapolis neighborhoods. The publication showed a student working at Stones Throw Urban farm, one of nearly two dozen community sites whereÌýAuggies assisted with cleaning, painting, gardening, and more.ÌýView the image on the Star Tribune site.

Sculptures by Alexandra Buffalohead ’13 called show ‘highlight’

A recent City Pages article reviewed the opening of “On Fertile Ground: Native Artists in the Upper Midwest” being heldÌýat All My Relations Gallery in Minneapolis. Augsburg College alumna Alexandra Buffalohead ’13 is among those showing work at the gallery. City Pages describes Buffalohead’sÌýwork as “one of the highlights of the show” and describes her sculptures as hanging “like ghosts in front of a turquoise wall.”

Auggies featured in German newspaper

Augsburger AllegmeineThree Auggies were featured in a story in the Augsburger Allegmeine’s series “We are all Augsburger.” Natalya Brown, Kayla Feuchtmann, and Jens Pinther shared photos of themselves on campus, their areas of study, and comments about Augsburg College’s namesake with the German newspaper’sÌýNicole Prestle. Augsburg College receives grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation

The nonprofit Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation has awarded Augsburg College $150,000 to fund paid internships during the 2014-15 school year.

As one of 10 Minnesota colleges to receive a grant awardÌýfrom Great Lakes, Augsburg will use newly available funds to convert previously unpaid internships into paid placements thatÌýsupport learningÌýon and off campus.

The grant award garnered media coverage in theÌýStar Tribune article, “Giving beat: Great Lakes Higher Ed gives $5.2 million for internship grants,” and the Inside Philanthropy story, “Graduating Is Not Enough: How This Funder Is Backing Student CareerÌýReadiness.”

Augsburg named among most LGBT-friendly colleges in U.S.

Campus Pride, a nonprofit organization aimed at creating more LGBT-friendly colleges, compiled the list fromÌýschools that achieved the highest ratings in categories such as LGBT academic life, LGBT student life, LGBT housing, and more. In 2013, Campus Pride awarded Augsburg College a perfect score ofÌý5 out of 5 stars on itsÌýLGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index.

Augsburg grad student on MPR News

Lorna “Emmy” Her Many Horses ’15, an Augsburg graduate student, was featured on MPR News for her work on translating the Star Spangled Banner to the Lakota and Dakota languages.

Her Many Horses, whoÌýgrew up on a South Dakota Indian reservationÌýand works for the Division of Indian Work,Ìýsaid reworking the national anthem was no easy task, “It was quite a process, figuring out what words we needed to make up,” she said.

Congratulations to Auggies named to Spring Semester Dean’s List

More than 700 Augsburg College undergraduate students were named to the 2014 Spring Semester Dean’s List. Students named to the list achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.00 scale.

Students who wish to notify their hometown newspapers of their achievement can do so at their discretion.
