Augsburg wrestling’s record win draws media attention

In mid-March, Augsburg Collegewonits 12thNCAA Division III wrestling championshipand took home a number of awards from the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Head coachJim Moulsoffwas named Division III National Coach of the Year and Division III Rookie Coach of the Year. Tony Valek ’12was named Assistant Coach of the Year, andMike Fuenffinger ’15won his second national title and the Outstanding Wrestler honor. Eric Hensel ’16 won Most Falls in Least Time, and Donny Longendyke ’15 earnedhis first national title.

Whitney Restemayer ’10 wins one for the record books

Whitney Restemayer ’10 was featured in the Bemidji Pioneer – a northern-Minnesota newspaper – due to her achievementas the first woman to coacha state hockey champion team in Minnesota.

As head coach, Restemayer led the Thief River Falls Prowlers to the state High School Girls Hockey Tournament Class A Championship and to defeat Blake high school 3-1.The accomplishment,Restemayer affirms,will be thefirst of many to come.

“I know I’m the first to win, but I enjoy knowing that I won’t be the last,” Restemayer said in an interview.

Curt Rice ’84 named rector of prestigious Norwegian university college

Curt Rice ’84was appointed the new rector of theOslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences, the largest institution of its kind in Norway.

“I’ll work to assure that our institution makes its mark both nationally and internationally. And together we will achieve our goal of becoming a university,” Rice said in an interview.

Rice, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Augsburg and a PhD in general linguistics from the University of Texas, currently leads the Committee on Gender Balance and Diversity in Research and is the Board Head of Current Research Information System in Norway.

 

Kuoth Wiel ’14 continues ‘The Good Lie’ benevolence

Kuoth Wiel ’14 appeared inan article by aNewsCafe – a California-based online news magazine – about a screening of the film “The Good Lie” sponsored by Genocide No More-Save Darfur, an organizationaimed at bringing awareness of genocide in Sudan and aiding Sudanese refugees.

Wiel, who was a star in thefilm and continues her ownhumanitarian efforts, will make an appearance at the screening andpartake in a question and answer session after the viewing.

Augsburg grad joins distinguished medical practice

Bruce Cunningham ’77was featured by the Pine and Lakes Echo Journal afterjoining the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby, Minn., as a family physician.

Cunningham, who is a longtime Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree form Augsburg College andearned his Doctor of Osteopathy at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgeryin Iowa.

Janelle Holte ’14 joins Peace Corps

Janelle Holte ’14has been accepted into the Midwest Peace Corps, according to the Aitkin Age.

Through volunteering, Holte will workto identify resources and agriculture projects that can be developed and implemented to generate income. She will also facilitate training in farm management and work with schools to enhance and expand environmental education.

Holte, who holds a bachelor’s degree in business marketing and communications, will join 202Minnesota residents currently serving in the Peace Corps. She will serve in Jamaica.

“As I traveled more, studied abroad in college and volunteered, I realized that I thrive off of new experiences, meeting new people, and giving back to others any way I am able to,” Holte said in an interview.

Jim Miles ’14 MBA writes first book, starts publishing company

54f5e8514c92e.imageJim Miles ’14 MBAwas featured by the Hibbing Daily Tribune for publishing his first book and launching a digital publishing company.

Miles’book, “Hero,” is based on a comic book superhero-type but is written in novel form. In the Daily Tribune article, he describes it as a“genre-breaking novel for middle readers.”

Wrobel Street Publishing, Miles’ new company through which he published his novel, wasnamedafter hisfamily members.

Miles holds a master’s degree from Augsburg College.

Brent Peroutka ’02 appears in Faribault Daily News

Brent Peroutka ’02was featured in the Faribault Daily News due to his career in finance and community achievements.

Peroutka, who is a financial advisor at Comprehensive Wealth Solutions in Faribault,says the best part of his day is helping his clients achieve their goals.

“We can make a difference each and every day, whether it’s at home, at work, or in the community,” Peroutka said.

Peroutka holds a business administration/finance degree from Augsburg College and a master of business administration from St. ThomasUniversity.

Mai Vang ’14 interviewed by Pioneer Press

Mai Vang ’14appeared in a Pioneer Press articleabout the increase in socio-economic achievementsfor those in the Hmong community in the Twin Cities.

Vang,who’s family settled here in the 1970s, said hard work and determination has brought increasedsuccess for herself and others in the Hmong community in recent years.

Her parents, Vang said,motivated her to “…go to school and be successful.”

Vang holds a bachelor’s degree in sociologyfrom Augsburg College.

Leif Sverdrup, an Augsburg College alumnus from 1918,was featured by The Foreigner, a Norwegian newspaper.

Sverdrup, who attended Augsburg College after serving in World War I with the U.S. Army, was born in Norway but moved with his family to Minnesota at the age of 17. Hereceived a bachelor’s degree from Augsburg and a bachelor’sdegree in civil engineering from the University of Minnesota.
