  {"id":35848,"date":"2021-12-28T21:36:49","date_gmt":"2021-12-28T21:36:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/river\/?page_id=35848"},"modified":"2025-03-01T19:21:38","modified_gmt":"2025-03-01T19:21:38","slug":"2023-proposed-itinerary","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/river\/2023-proposed-itinerary\/","title":{"rendered":"2023 Itinerary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the 2023 expedition we<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plan to travel from the Headwaters to the Gulf of Mexico, traveling approximately 800 miles of that distance on the water (with the remainder traveling in vans).\u00a0 We cover that distance on the water over the course of 40 days of sailing or paddling, with the remainder being spent in layover days camping on islands and with site visits in locations along the way.\u00a0 The itinerary is broken down into five segments: the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headwaters, the\u00a0<\/span>Upper Mississippi and the Twin Cities, the Middle Mississippi and St. Louis, the Lower Mississippi (from Natchez to New Orleans) and the Delta and Gulf South.\u00a0 Programming and curriculum are being developed in coordination with Field Stations in each of these regions that are part of the &#8220;Mississippi River Watershed: An Immersive Humanities Curriculum,&#8221; funded by a Mellon Foundation &#8220;Humanities for the Future&#8221; grant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DRAFT ITINERARY (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aug. 29-30: Headwaters of the Mississippi.\u00a0 Lake Itasca orientation and site visits related to pipeline and mining controversies and the University of Minnesota Biological Field Research Station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aug. 31 &#8211; Sept. 4: <strong>Field Station 1<\/strong> Paddling the Headwaters (5 days in tandem canoes)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sept. 5 &#8211; 8: <strong>Field Station 2<\/strong> Twin Cities site visits related to environmental justice, riverfront redevelopment, and Indigenous resistance in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sept. 9: Transit with boats on trailers to near Keokuk, Iowa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sept. 10 &#8211; Oct. 10: Sail and paddle the Middle Mississippi River &amp; St. Louis from Keokuk to Cairo, Illinois (~350 miles on the river; in St. Louis for <strong>Field Station 3<\/strong> from Sept. 28 &#8211; Oct. 1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oct. 11-17 Transit by van to <strong>Field Station 4<\/strong>\u00a0in Memphis (3 nights) and then Jackson, MS (2 nights).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oct. 18 &#8211; Nov. 20: Relaunch boats from Natchez and sail through Baton Rouge and the Chemical Corridor to New Orleans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nov. 21-28: <strong>Field Station 5<\/strong> with multiple Site visits and activities in New Orleans and surrounding area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nov. 29 &#8211; Dec. 6: Final sail-paddle from New Orleans to Mardi Gras Pass and then along the Gulf Coast to Biloxi, MS (weather dependent).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dec. 7-13:\u00a0 Work on final projects, presentations, with a final celebration in New Orleans on Dec. 13.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dec. 14 &#8211;
