Only commencement-eligible students will receive information regarding the commencement ceremony; substantial and important communications about commencement are sent mid-December through late February.

The commencement ceremony held each May is for those graduate students who have completed, or will be completing, their graduation requirements during that academic year. An academic year begins with the fall semester and ends with the summer semester.

Please direct any questions to your grad program coordinator or director.

If any of the following information changes, notify graduation@augsburg.edu immediately.

*Student can also update this information in Records & Registration

Skip the next Graduation Checklist section, which only applies to undergraduate students. You are advised to submit your Form at least one semester prior to degree completion in case you and your mentor have overlooked a graduation requirement.

However, students who want to participate in the optional May commencement ceremony need to submit their Form by mid-November. Only students with a completed and approved ITG Form on file in the Registrar’s Office are eligible to participate in the ceremony. Only commencement-eligible students will receive information regarding the commencement ceremony; substantial and important communications about commencement are sent mid-December through late February.

The qualification for commencement ceremony eligibility is two-fold: 1) 12 credits or less remaining on Commencement Day, and 2) a realistic plan for finishing any remaining credits (not more than 12) by the end of December.

Your submitted Intent to Graduate Form will be reviewed by the Registrar’s Office. If the form is incomplete, the Registrar’s Office will follow up with you. Resolve the issue(s) so that the process can continue. Once the Registrar’s Office has approved your form, your Intent to Graduate will be posted to your Augnet account under Records and Registration, and you will receive an automated email letting you know that it has been approved and processed.

To see your approved Intent to Graduate (ITG) Form, go to Records and Registration, click on “Intent to Graduate” under the Degree Progress header, and click on the “Intent to Graduate” url.

When registering for classes, reference your degree audit and Page 2 of your ITG Form. If you need to revise your plan, make sure you are working with an advisor. If you need to take a different course than is listed on Page 2, make sure that the course is an option on your degree audit for the unmet sub-requirement. If the course is not listed, contact your faculty mentor to seek a substitution approval. If your mentor approves the substitution, remind your mentor to notify graduation@augsburg.edu of the approval so that your degree audit will reflect the approved substitution within a day or two.

After registering for classes, check your degree audit to to make sure that all of your registered courses are fulfilling the intended sub-requirements. If you have any concerns about where the registered courses are appearing on your degree audit, contact your faculty mentor. The faculty mentor may need to consider a course substitution, or you may need to register for a different course. If your faculty mentor approves a substitution, remind your mentor to send an email to graduation@augsburg.edu about the approval so that your degree audit will reflect the approved substitution within a day or two.

Regularly review your progress toward meeting graduation requirements by looking at your current Degree Audit under the Degree Progress header in Records & Registration. Contact your faculty mentor or graduation@augsburg.edu about any degree audit concerns.

Occasionally verify your information in Records & Registration under “Student Info/Contacts.”

Periodically review the first page of your form. If any of the information below is incorrect or has changed, notify graduation@augsburg.edu to prevent delays to your graduation. If you are making changes that do not have a significant impact on your completion plans (taking a course in Fall instead of Spring, changing from one elective option to another listed option), you do not need to notify the Registrar’s Office. When in doubt, send an email.

Commencement is a ceremony for students to celebrate their academic achievement with friends and family. Participation is optional. Commencement happens either after a student has graduated or before a student has graduated. Students do not graduate during the ceremony, and participating does not guarantee graduation. See the definition of graduation in the next section.

Commencement is held at the end of each Spring semester. Information about this year’s ceremony (timing, location, etc.) will be updated on our commencement website as details about the ceremony become available.

Only students with an approved Intent to Graduate Form on file in the Registrar’s Office are eligible for commencement. Only commencement-eligible students receive commencement ceremony communication.

If plans change and you want to be eligible for next year’s commencement ceremony rather than this year’s ceremony, you need to officially defer to next year’s ceremony by sending an email to graduation@augsburg.edu. The deadline is the current year’s Commencement Day.

Once the final grades have been submitted for your planned graduation term, Augsburg personnel will review your records to see whether you have met all degree requirements. Graduation (degree conferral) is what happens when your records are updated with a degree date to show that all degree requirements have been met.

New graduates receive a congratulatory email in their Augsburg account the next morning. If you are ordering transcripts to demonstrate degree completion, please wait until you receive this graduation notification to prevent having to order and pay for the final transcript a second time.

Typically, the degree date printed on your diploma and transcript will be whichever degree date of twelve is closest to the completion of your final requirements. Augsburg has one degree date per month.

Diplomas are mailed out to everyone having a status of “Graduated”. You will first receive an email and a text from Parchment with instructions for accessing your digital diploma. Parchment will then mail a paper diploma within 3-4 weeks.

Please make sure that your mailing address, permanent email address, and cell phone number are correct in Records & Registration.

Also make sure that all financial obligations and exit loan counseling requirements have been met.

As a graduate of Augsburg University you will receive invitations to alumni events, the Augsburg NOW, and a monthly e-Newsletter to keep you informed of events at the University and updates on former classmates. To ensure you receive these things, please keep your contact information up-to-date.
