Namibia is a large and sparsely populated country on Africa\u2019s southwest coast, a beautiful place named for the world\u2019s oldest desert, the Namibia. This practicum explores the socio-cultural determinants of health, epidemiology, care systems (professional and traditional), and health policies within the context of Namibian history and globalization. This practicum’s prominent themes are understanding people\u2019s realities while developing leadership skills that foster equitable use of resources to meet healthcare needs within communities.<\/p>\n
Students are offered a variety of experiences to learn from the people of Namibia, including:
\n\u2022 Visit with Indigenous communities
\n\u2022 Experience a safari
\n\u2022 Explore healthcare facilities, both public & private
\n\u2022 Meet with Ministry of Health Officials
\n\u2022 Travel to Swakopmund, a coastal city (cultural guide on the genocide of Herero and Nama people)
\n\u2022 Time with grassroots, advocacy community organizations<\/p>\n

This immersion course is typically a 10-14 day experience offered in the spring semester. Only a limited number of students can participate in this experience, so please express your interest in participating in this experience by emailing Colleen Hagerman at hagerman@augsburg.edu. The next immersion is planned for February 16 \u2013 March 2, 2026.
