We are so grateful for the generosity of this community of people who support our mission.<\/p>\n<h2>Augsburg Donors Ensure Opportunities<\/h2>\n<h3>Parents:<\/h3>\n<p>Hazen and Kathy Graves<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hazen:<\/strong> Retired partner at Faegre Baker Daniels law firm<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kathy:<\/strong> Principal for communications and planning firm Parenteau Graves<\/li>\n<li><strong>Priority:<\/strong> Support higher education institutions that serve students with physical disabilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When Hazen and Kathy Graves toured Augsburg with their son, <strong>Sam Graves \u201916<\/strong>, they found that it offered the unique assistance Sam needed as a young man with cerebral palsy who uses a power wheelchair. \u201cAs we learned more about the support Augsburg offers to students with various kinds of challenges, we came to understand that Augsburg had been doing this for a long time,\u201d said Hazen.<\/p>\n<p>Sam graduated with a degree in psychology.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of supporting Augsburg financially occurred to both Hazen and Kathy independently, and they decided to donate $50,000 to endow a scholarship. \u201cAccess to higher education is a big issue,\u201d Hazen said, \u201cand we\u2019re just doing our little part.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Alumni:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Brian Anderson \u201982<\/strong> and <strong>Leeann Rock \u201981<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Brian:<\/strong> PhD in physics at the University of Minnesota, taught at Augsburg, joined Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leeann:<\/strong> MD from the University of Minnesota, pathologist at Frederick Memorial Hospital<\/li>\n<li><strong>Priority:<\/strong> Expand students\u2019 academic opportunities and multidisciplinary efforts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Husband and wife <strong>Brian Anderson \u201982<\/strong> and <strong>Leeann Rock \u201981<\/strong> are donating $50,000 to endow the Raymond E. and Margaret J. Anderson Scholarship in honor of Brian\u2019s parents\u2019 legacy, as well as in honor of Brian\u2019s brother, Augsburg Physics Professor Emeritus <strong>Stuart Anderson \u201978<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Brian\u2019s father, the late Raymond E. Anderson, joined Augsburg in 1949 as a speech and communications professor. Brian\u2019s mother, the late <strong>Margaret J. Anderson<\/strong>, came to Augsburg in 1967 and became library director.<\/p>\n<p>Endowing a scholarship is \u201ca formal way of maintaining our relationship with Augsburg while ensuring more opportunities for students in the future,\u201d Brian said.<\/p>\n<h3>Friend:<\/h3>\n<p>Linda Giacomo<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Retired clinical psychologist who studied at the State University of New York\u2014Buffalo and Michigan State University<\/li>\n<li><strong>Priority:<\/strong> Equitable representation of women in education and leadership, including in faculty roles, administration, and political offices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Linda Giacomo<\/strong> was the first in her family to attend college. She empathizes with immigrant struggles, recalling impoverished grandparents who left southern Italy to become naturalized U.S. citizens and parents who could not afford their children\u2019s college tuition despite holding four jobs combined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEducation is transformative in a way that gives you so much power and choice.
