That vision came to life this past January with the grand opening of the Norman and Evangeline Hagfors Center for Science, Business, and Religion, a signature academic building that celebrates Augsburg\u2019s historic roots, contemporary relevance, and promising future.<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8718 size-full\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Hagfors Center anchors the west side of campus, providing new green space that will connect with the quad after the removal of Science Hall and create an open east-to-west pedestrian flow through to Murphy Square.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Placemaking<\/h3>\n<p>The Hagfors Center front doors open onto a brand new roundabout at the west end of South 7th Street, with a direct view to the main entrance of the Foss Lobeck Miles Center and the atrium of Hoversten Chapel. Inside the building, the west wing extends from the lobby at a diagonal that runs parallel to Riverside Avenue. It connects with the north wing in an \u201copen-arms\u201d embrace of the community garden, where neighbors and members of the campus community grow food, build relationships, and engage in hands-on learning experiences.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8723 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/now\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/05\/Hagfors-Sculpture.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/now\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/05\/Hagfors-Sculpture.png 900w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/now\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/05\/Hagfors-Sculpture-768x520.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/>A Celebration of Cultures and Faith Traditions<\/h3>\n<p>Gundale Chapel is named for <strong>Elnar Gundale \u201933<\/strong>, who emigrated from Norway to the United States in 1930 and studied at Augsburg College and Seminary. He was ordained in 1937 as a Lutheran Free Church pastor and served several parishes for nearly 60 years. He and his wife, Catherine, raised six children (four of whom attended Augsburg). Their daughter, Evangeline, and her husband, Norm, are the named benefactors of the Hagfors Center. The multicolor glass sculpture that hangs in the Gundale Chapel incorporates textile designs from contemporary and ancient cultures and religions. Augsburg incorporated these \u201cdepartment homes\u201d throughout the new building\u2014providing interactive learning spaces for all science, business, and religion students and faculty. The building also boasts multiple casual learning spaces, which are popular among students of all majors. Its grow rooms allow students to cultivate plants for lab courses using modern plant science methods. There are modern meeting rooms for presentations with local businesses and entrepreneurs, aquaria that provide a hands-on experience with marine aquatic creatures like algae and sponges, and a food lab where students study the physics, chemistry, and social impact of our food systems. The building has two green roofs\u2014one on a flexible, ground-\u001efloor learning space and another above the front entrance canopy.<\/p>\n<p>During construction, Augsburg exceeded its goal of awarding more than 10 percent of the project\u2019s contracts to women- and minority-owned businesses. Lindell Library, custom glass etchings bridge disparate disciplines, both \u001ffiguratively and literally. The etchings, which also make the skyway glass bird-safe, feature unconventional word pairings, such as \u201cde\u001ffine divinity\u201d and \u201clove density,\u201d that are designed to make people think. The skyway was funded through the generosity of <strong>John R. Paulson<\/strong> and <strong>Norma L.
