The award is given to a school or university that outperforms expectations in terms of student leadership, campus involvement, and uni\u001ffied sports\u2014a program in which athletes with intellectual disabilities train and play sports together with partners without intellectual disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>According to Devin Kaasa, competition and training manager for Special Olympics Minnesota, Augsburg was selected for the many ways it supported the Special Olympics organization in 2016\u201317, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Participating in a uni\u001ffied rivalry with Hamline University, where the universities competed in \u001eflag football and uni\u001ffied basketball;<\/li>\n<li>Engaging in signi\u001fficant volunteer activity, including at the Fall Games, where the Auggie football team \u001f filled volunteer spots in bocce and softball;<\/li>\n<li>Holding a \u201cRespect Campaign\u201d and inviting Special Olympics Global Messenger Patrick Elmore to speak about his experience of school bullying;<\/li>\n<li>Hosting \u201cSpecial Olympics Week at Augsburg\u201d in January 2017 with multiple activities and events; and<\/li>\n<li>Taking the Polar Plunge at Bde Maka Ska (Lake Calhoun) to raise funds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cAugsburg went above and beyond with its participation, and continues to exceed expectations with the program,\u201d Kaasa said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This fall, Augsburg was honored as Champion School of the Year by Special Olympics Minnesota.
