The Imprint is a national media organization that focuses on U.S. child welfare and youth justice systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200bI kind of got tired of being a professor who talked in my family sociology class about the problems of the system and hoped my students would go do something,\u201d said Tim Pippert, Augsburg\u2019s Joel S. Torstenson Endowed Professor, who launched the program three years ago. \u201cI just wanted to stop ignoring that and see what we could do as an institution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The answer was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/augsburgfamilyscholars\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Augsburg Family Scholars<\/span><\/a>, the only college-based program in the state of Minnesota designed to narrow the opportunity gap for students with foster care backgrounds through a combination of financial assistance, targeted academic support, and an intentional sense of community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pippert says Graduate Assistant Savannah Mitchell is an essential part of the program\u2019s success, building trust and connection with students who have often had to rely only on themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI really needed a lot more support,\u2019\u2019 Mitchell said, reflecting on her own college experience following foster care. \u201cI needed financial support and housing support and food resources, and stuff like that.
