The Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes students who stand out for their commitment to creating positive change in communities locally and around the world. Fellows are nominated by Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors, who are invited to select one outstanding student from their campus each year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reyes is a social work major and Bonner Community Leader student intern, through which she helps create internship opportunities with off-campus organizations. She also works with Augsburg\u2019s Latinx Student Services and spent a semester in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for \u201cSocial Work in a Latin American Context,\u201d a program hosted by Augsburg\u2019s Center for Global Education and Experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve learned from an early age that meaningful change starts with oneself,\u201d Reyes said in a personal statement. \u201cWhile growing up in church, I was actively involved and developed a deep sense of purpose and responsibility to contribute to my community. I began to think about who I wanted to be<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one who cares deeply about the people around me. The leadership roles I\u2019ve taken on in college helped me gain confidence and see a clearer understanding of what kind of leader I want to be\u2014someone who listens, supports, and cares.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus Compact provides Newman Fellows with a year of learning and networking opportunities that emphasize personal, professional, and civic growth. Each year, fellows participate in numerous virtual training and networking opportunities to help provide them with the skills and connections they need to create large-scale positive change. The cornerstone of the fellowship is the Annual Convening of Fellows, which offers intensive in-person skill-building and networking over the course of two days. The fellowship also provides fellows with pathways to apply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDiana builds connections and tools in her academic work that provide meaningful support for community members,\u201d wrote President Paul C. Pribbenow in his nomination letter. \u201cShe is a leader on several committees on campus as well, facilitating ethical and equitable relationships between faculty, students, and the communities she works alongside.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It is an honor to welcome this group of accomplished and dedicated students to the Newman Civic Fellowship,&#8221; said Campus Compact President Bobbie Laur. &#8220;As higher education faces unprecedented challenges, these students exemplify the power and possibility of civic and community engagement on campus. As they emerge as the leaders of tomorrow, we are proud that this fellowship will be part of their story.
