  {"id":1389,"date":"2010-04-01T19:05:38","date_gmt":"2010-04-01T19:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/now\/?p=1389"},"modified":"2016-01-04T17:31:12","modified_gmt":"2016-01-04T17:31:12","slug":"auggies-on-the-ice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/now\/2010\/04\/01\/auggies-on-the-ice\/","title":{"rendered":"Auggies on the ice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BY DON STONER<\/p>\n<h2>Chris Johnson &#8217;10&#8211;A third-generation hockey star<\/h2>\n<p>Chris Johnson certainly has an impressive hockey pedigree.<\/p>\n<p>Chris is the son of Mark Johnson, a member of the fabled \u201cMiracle on Ice\u201d 1980 U.S. Olympic team, a pro hockey star, and coach of the 2010 U.S. Olympic women\u2019s silver-medal hockey squad. He\u2019s the grandson of \u201cBadger\u201d Bob Johnson, one of the greatest coaches in American hockey history\u2014who also happened to attend Augsburg for a year before transferring to the University of Wisconsin. And his siblings all played hockey on various teams. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But Chris Johnson has also made a name for himself as a leader of the Auggie men\u2019s hockey team. A native of Verona, Wis., Johnson had a terrific career as an Auggie, scoring 41 goals with 74 assists for 115 points in his 104-game career. He had a goal or assist in 15 of Augsburg\u2019s 27 games this season, including seven multiple-point efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s squads reached the MIAC postseason playoffs in three of his four seasons, including two with him as team captain. He earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors all four seasons and All-American honors last year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2010\/04\/chrisJOHNSON-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1395 alignnone\" title=\"chrisJOHNSON-2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2010\/04\/chrisJOHNSON-2.jpg\" alt=\"picture of Chris Johnson\" width=\"500\" height=\"368\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Off the ice, Johnson will also be remembered as a top hockey player. He\u2019s a member of Augsburg\u2019s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has helped lead hockey ministry and Bible-study groups of student-athletes. He\u2019s also worked with the Herb Brooks Foundation\u2019s \u201cRink Rats\u201d program, teaching hockey skills to students from the Seward Montessori School. Johnson is a finance major with a 3.4 GPA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHockey was everywhere when we were growing up, in a good way, not in a pressure way,\u201d Johnson told columnist Rachel Blount of the <em>Star Tribune<\/em> in a January feature. \u201cWe all got to play at the same high school as my dad. He taught us that even though we might have a last name that helps, it doesn\u2019t matter if you don\u2019t work hard. But he also told us that at the end of the day, it\u2019s all about having fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This season was a special one for the Johnson family. Since the U.S. women\u2019s hockey team was based at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn., prior to the Olympics, Mark\u2014who took a leave of absence from his job as coach of the University of Wisconsin women\u2019s hockey team to lead the Olympic squad\u2014had ample opportunities to be with his son in the Twin Cities. Mark attended several of his son\u2019s games at Augsburg, and the two met weekly for dinner and father-son bonding.<\/p>\n<p>In a \u201cProfiles of Excellence\u201d feature on the CollegeSportingNews.com website by Rich Mies in January, Chris Johnson said that his experience at Augsburg has been a positive one. \u201cI\u2019ve received a great education here,\u201d he said, \u201cand I cherish the relationships I\u2019ve made here with teammates, coaches, teachers, and friends.
