Campus programs like Campus Cupboard and ShareShop reflect the university’s environmental stewardship and social consciousness.

Campus Cupboard is Augsburg’s food shelf, which provides students and recent alumni with access to free food and other essentials like toilet paper and shampoo. The cupboard is open for in-person shopping in the basement of Anderson Residence Hall, but the staff also make contactless curbside and off-campus deliveries.

Serving students since 2013, Campus Cupboard is an essential part of Campus Kitchen, which manages more than 80 community garden plots and delivers meals—made from dining services’ surplus—to area youth programs, seniors, and community centers. Campus Kitchen also hosts food demos, shares recipes, and distributes excess produce from area farmers. Learn more about the Campus Cupboard and ways to donate to this and other Campus Kitchen initiatives on the Campus Kitchen webpage.

Students created the ShareShop in 2019 to help the Augsburg community save money and reduce consumption of material goods, while providing a space that fosters community and informal learning about sustainable practices. Located in the basement of the Science Building, the shop features free clothes and household goods such as kitchen appliances, furniture, sheet sets, and more. Some items are free while others are available to check out.

The shop, which is open year round, expanded in 2021 to offer a pop-up location in the Strommen Center for Meaningful Work. Partnering with Campus Cupboard, the satellite location offers nonperishable food, school supplies, clothes, and professional attire.

In spring 2022, the shop held the inaugural MoveOut effort in partnership with Residence Life. The partnership made it easy for students moving out of the dorms to donate small appliances, furniture, fans, kitchenware, clothes, and more to the ShareShop rather than tossing unwanted items into dumpsters. In Fall 2020, the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship launched Augsburg Local, an effort to leverage Augsburg University’s purchasing power to support local businesses. Through a partnership with Augsburg’s dining services, students and staff involved with Augsburg Local began conversations about reimagining sustainability, representation, cultural competence, and being a good neighbor by serving healthy dishes featuring foods sourced from environmentally sustainable local vendors. A salad creation team was born in an effort to support this transition.

The Sabo Center’s salad creation team includes staff and students from the Environmental Stewardship Committee, Campus Kitchen, and Augsburg Local. The team has drawn on the work of young people from community partners, including Pillsbury United Communities’ Waite House (in the Phillips neighborhood in South Minneapolis) and the local nonprofit Roots for the Home Team, which focuses on mentoring teens through community gardening and hands-on learning with chefs.

Augsburg’s salad creation team researched and developed signature salads that were first sold in The Commons last fall. The development of seasonal, locally sourced salads occurred through a series of workshops during Summer 2021 with participation from students, staff, faculty, and community members with expertise from local vendors, farmers, and dining services staff. Trial ingredients came from The Good Acre (a Twin Cities food hub), the Seward Community Co-op, and other local vendors and farmers to support and develop their capacity to supply Augsburg dining services in the long term.

This co-created salad project serves as a stepping stone toward a greater commitment to local and sustainable food procurement at Augsburg. A shift toward local food purchasing at Augsburg will help build a more sustainable local economy.

Dua Saleh ’17 plays the new character Cal Bowman in the third season of the award-winning Netflix show “Sex Education,” a British teen comedy-drama series. Saleh’s character is an American student from Minneapolis whose parents moved them to the United Kingdom. Like Cal, the first nonbinary character on the show, Saleh is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. Saleh and a nonbinary consultant assisted Netflix with the script.

The Sudanese-American musician, poet, and activist began writing poetry their second year at Augsburg and performed at open mic events. Seeing people’s positive responses encouraged Saleh to write songs and make music, which led to the eventual release of two EPs. Previously, Saleh performed in an underground theater in Minneapolis. The Netflix show is their first professional acting role.

“I want people to feel validated,” Saleh told Netflix. “Cal is a nonbinary, Black character, and I want people to think, ‘Oh, my gosh, I can believe I’ve seen myself on this series. I can believe I’ve seen myself represented in mainstream media.’ That’s what I want the most.”

On Monday, May 3, Augsburg University celebrated commencement virtually with the release of a prerecorded video ceremony. The event included remarks from several presenters and personalized slides for graduates displaying photos and messages that the students submitted. The viewers posted comments to the videostream as they watched the event, and students took to social media to share their graduation posts using the hashtag #AuggieGrad.

On Tuesday, June 8, Augsburg held an in-person commencement for the classes of 2020 and 2021 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Because the 2020 commencement ceremony was virtual in alignment with public health guidelines designed to prevent the spread of COVID-19, many graduates from the Class of 2020 opted to participate in the 2021 in-person ceremony, where attendees were asked to wear face masks and stay physically distanced from guests of different households.

In its March meeting, the Augsburg University Board of Regents’ executive committee unanimously approved a multiyear contract renewal for President Paul Pribbenow, who joined the university in 2006 as its 10th president.

“In an era when five- or six-year presidencies are common in higher education, President Pribbenow’s long-term leadership of the university has enabled Augsburg to achieve remarkable things,” said Matt Entenza, chair of Augsburg’s Board of Regents. “The university has become one of the most diverse private institutions in the Midwest during his tenure and has welcomed record-breaking first-year classes in the past two years. The university is fortunate to continue to have Paul’s transformational leadership through 2027.”

Pribbenow is recognized as a leading figure among the nation’s higher education private institutions and is an engaging teacher on ethics, philanthropy, and American public life.
