Louise and RegentĀ Emeritus ³¢±š±ō²¹²Ō»åĢżā€œLeeā€ Sundet ·É¾±±ō±ōĢżhelp Augsburg’sĀ Rochester site grow thanks to a generousĀ $1.5 million gift. The Rochester locationĀ attracts more than 350 working professionalsĀ to undergraduate and graduate programs inĀ business, education, health care, and nursing.

As longtime supporters of Augsburg,Ā including the Weekend College and Youth andĀ Family Ministry programs, the Sundets haveĀ used their frugality to benefit others and toĀ raise the profile of Augsburg. Several years ago,Ā in an effort to better communicate Augsburg’sĀ identity locally, Sundet helped form a marketingĀ committee and was instrumental in choosing aĀ new logo with a cross embedded in the ā€œA.ā€ HeĀ remains steadfast in his commitment to religionĀ and religious freedom as essential toĀ education.

In his 88 years, Lee has never lostĀ sight of the basics: thrift, generosity,Ā and faith.

ā€œI also believe in old-fashionedĀ disciplineā€”ā€˜don’t spend it till you’ve earnedĀ it,ā€™ā€ he said.

Lee learned these principles early, growingĀ up in Spring Grove, Minnesota, where mostĀ Norwegian-American community membersĀ attended the big Lutheran church. ā€œMy fatherĀ died when I was six months old, and my motherĀ was quite ill so she had to sell everything sheĀ had to pay the bills. She got $7.43 a month,Ā and of that, 74 cents went to the church,ā€ saidĀ Lee, who has embraced tithing ever since.

A retired industrialist and manufacturer,Ā Lee owned several companies, includingĀ Century Manufacturing, GoodallĀ Manufacturing, Britt Manufacturing, andĀ Fountain Industries. His business acumenĀ earned him such honors as Minnesota’s SmallĀ Business Man of the Year and the UniversityĀ of Minnesota’s Outstanding AchievementĀ Award. The couple has sponsored a businessĀ scholarship at Augsburg since 1992.

Overall, the Sundets are impressed by theĀ potential of Augsburg’s programs in RochesterĀ and by the work of another community anchor,Ā Mayo Clinic, which the couple believes sharesĀ their values.

ā€œI have met people at Mayo who have goneĀ through the Augsburg program, and I’ve seenĀ what it’s done for them. It’s a wonderful thing,ā€Ā Lee said. ā€œIt wasn’t easy to get it started, butĀ it’s fun to look back on. Augsburg has comeĀ a long way, and I would love to see it grow inĀ Rochester.ā€
