Before they take to the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-90 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/norwayhub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/124\/2019\/05\/download-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"278\" \/>streets,\u00a0many will gather for a 17 May breakfast\u00a0\u2013 often a potluck with friends and neighbors \u2013 with freshly baked bread, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, and for the grown-ups,\u00a0champagne.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"contentRender contentRender_26 contentRender_type_widget contentRender_name_plugins_core_textbox\" data-sv-time=\"85\" data-sv-index=\"26\" data-gtm-vars=\"{ &quot;tCore&quot; : { &quot;contentNum&quot; : &quot;4&quot; } }\">\n<p>Children\u2019s parades then take place across the country, and led by marching bands they walk through their communities. The largest of the traditional parades attract tens of thousands of people waving flags and shouting \u201churra!\u201d. Perhaps, but the non-militaristic and generally joyous atmosphere, in addition to the children\u2019s special place in the celebrations, makes the day a largely uncontroversial affair.\u00a0The focus is mostly on eating huge amounts of ice cream\u00a0and hot dogs, listening to speeches, and playing games at local\u00a0schools.<\/p>\n<p>The day is also an opportunity for EVERONE to show off their \u201cbunad\u201d, Norway\u2019s traditional costumes. There are hundreds of different ones, with colors and styles\u00a0indicating ancestry and geographical belonging<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This Sunday, May 19, the <strong>Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church<\/strong> (Mindekirken) will replicate on a smaller scale the experience and celebrations in Norway, with a program full of family friendly fun including church service, parades, games and bouncy houses for children, folk dances, many many bunads and loads of ice cream.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 17 May we are commemorating the signing of the constitution on that date in 1814.
