His poem, \u201cwhat the dead know by heart,\u201d previously won Augsburg\u2019s John R. Mitchell Prize, which qualified him for the prestigious award. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins is a theater major who is active in the local, regional, and national spoken word and poetry scene. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2016\/09\/09\/books-poet-donte-smith\">Minnesota Public Radio<\/a> that he plans to use his $1,000 prize from the award to self-publish his first collection of poetry, a chapbook called \u201cautopsies.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Donte Collins \u201918 was named the \u201cMost Promising Young Poet\u201d by the Academy of American Poets this fall.
