Faculty, students, and staff shared their expertise on scholarship and pedagogy, experience as Auggies, and insight on current and special events. Here are the top 15 stories from 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The stories listed below \u2013 in chronological order \u2013 are only a small fraction of the many times Auggies made the news and celebrated accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Augsburg-hosted\u00a0<strong>Minnesota Urban Debate League<\/strong>\u00a0was featured throughout the year in a number of stories. Read a March\u00a0article\u00a0in\u00a0<em><strong>MinnPost<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>about how the program drives student success in inner-city schools.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0<em><strong>Star Tribune\u2019s<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Gail Rosenblum also wrote about MNUDL\u00a0in a March\u00a0story\u00a0that explored how debate fosters critical thinking skills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hans Wiersma<\/strong>, associate professor of religion, in March spoke with <strong>WCCO-TV<\/strong> reporter Jason DeRusha who answers viewers\u2019 inquiries in a Good Question segment. DeRusha asked Wiersma, \u201cWhy should non-Catholics care about the new\u00a0Pope?\u201d\u00a0Watch the television segment.<\/li>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3514\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3514\" style=\"width: 172px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3514 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/12\/BonJovi.jpg\" alt=\"Auggies had the rare opportunity to go on stage at the Bon Jovi concert this past spring. The group was interviewed by television stations\u2014including KARE 11, KSTP 5, and WCCO 4\u2014about their community service, education, and experiences working backstage.\" width=\"172\" height=\"90\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Auggies on stage at Bon Jovi.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Six Augsburg College students<\/strong> in March and April spoke with television reporters from <strong>KARE-11, KSTP, and WCCO-TV<\/strong> about their participation in the Bon Jovi \u201cBecause We Can\u201d College Community Service Challenge. The students were selected for this opportunity based upon their campus leadership and community engagement, and spoke with media before and during their time at the concert.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">When it seemed winter never would end, <strong>John Zobitz<\/strong>, associate professor of math, spoke in April with <\/span>WCCO <span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">about math and how it relates to climate. Watch the segment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\"><strong>Michael Grewe<\/strong>, coordinator of LGBTQIA services, spoke with <strong>KSTP<\/strong> television about Gov. Mark Dayton signing into law a bill that made legal same-sex marriage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Augsburg College commencement in May was a time of celebration. <strong>Mary Godi \u201813<\/strong>, the class speaker and a native of Sudan, spoke with the\u00a0<em><strong>Rochester Post-Bulletin<\/strong><\/em> about her pursuit of an education and being the first in her family to earn a college degree. Read the story.<\/li>\n<li>Auggie <strong>Kuoth Wiel \u201913<\/strong>, spoke with the <em><strong>Pioneer Press<\/strong> <\/em>for a story about balancing her studies with landing a role in a Hollywood film featuring Reese Witherspoon. Read the article.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">A unique summer camp at Augsburg College operated by <strong>Phil Adamo<\/strong>, associate professor of history, in July was profiled in the <strong><em>Star Tribune<\/em><\/strong>. The article explored how Medieval Minnesota offers high schoolers a glimpse into the real Middle Ages.\u00a0<\/span>Read the story<span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Augsburg College in July worked with <strong>Judge LaJune Thomas Lange &#8217;75<\/strong>, the honorary consul for South Africa for Minnesota, to celebrate the work and life of Nobel Peace Prize Winner Nelson Mandela for his 95<sup>th<\/sup> birthday. In the\u00a0<em>Everyday Health\u00a0article<\/em>, \u201cADHD and College Success: Nicolas\u2019 Story,\u201d Adducci in September talked about how the support he receives from Augsburg\u2019s\u00a0Center for Learning and Adaptive Student Services\u00a0(CLASS) allows him to double major in business management and psychology, make the dean\u2019s list, and shed much of the stigma associated with having a learning disability. Aoki also was interviewed on turnout numbers in varying Minneapolis wards for the story \u201cElection seems to signal the ascension of a new Minneapolis DFL\u201d on the\u00a0<\/span><em>MinnPost<\/em>\u00a0website<span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Professor of Economics <strong>Jeanne Boeh<\/strong>, who regularly speaks with media, in December was featured on <strong>WCCO-TV<\/strong> to talk about the holiday shopping season, which was shortened due to Thanksgiving\u2019s late date.
