{"id":3139,"date":"2007-10-15T11:38:48","date_gmt":"2007-10-15T16:38:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/inside.augsburg.edu\/news\/?p=3139"},"modified":"2007-10-15T11:38:48","modified_gmt":"2007-10-15T16:38:48","slug":"october-is-disability-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/2007\/10\/15\/october-is-disability-awareness-month\/","title":{"rendered":"October Is Disability Awareness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3122\" alt=\"dis_aware\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/05\/dis_aware.jpg\" width=\"280\" height=\"207\" \/>Congress has designated each October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and in recognition of that, the CLASS Office and Access Center are offering<\/p>\n<p>opportunities for faculty and staff to learn more about issues related to disability services.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1971, Augsburg has been committed to ensuring that our campus and curriculum are accessible to students with differing abilities, and as a result, there are about 400 currently enrolled Augsburg students who have contacted CLASS or Access about services for a disability.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This month, CLASS and the Access Center are hosting several events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Friday, Oct. 19, 3\u20135 p.m. in Lindell Library 301 \u2014 CLASS is leading a Friday\n<p>faculty\/staff forum about college students with Asperger Syndrome.<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday, Oct. 24 \u2014 CLASS and Access are inviting high school seniors to visit campus to hear from current students what it\u2019s like to be a student with a disability at Augsburg.<\/li>\n<li>Tuesday, Oct. 30 \u2014 CLASS and Access are hosting an ice cream social in the Groves Lab, Foss 17A, for faculty and staff to see adaptive technology in action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The CLASS office is also sponsoring a poster contest to promote awareness of disabilities on campus in a positive and collegial format, including a slogan or phrase to best convey understanding and acceptance for each individual\u2019s unique contributions.
