{"id":3089,"date":"2007-10-29T10:26:08","date_gmt":"2007-10-29T15:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/inside.augsburg.edu\/news\/?p=3089"},"modified":"2007-10-29T10:26:08","modified_gmt":"2007-10-29T15:26:08","slug":"augsburg-native-american-film-series-presents-way-of-the-warrior","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/2007\/10\/29\/augsburg-native-american-film-series-presents-way-of-the-warrior\/","title":{"rendered":"Augsburg Native American  Film Series presents Way of the Warrior"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3090\" alt=\"wayofwarrior\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/05\/wayofwarrior.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/>The American Indian Studies program kicks off its annual Film Series with <em>Way of the Warrior <\/em>on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. in the Science Building, room 123 on the Augsburg College campus.<\/p>\n<p><em>Way of the Warrior<\/em> uses personal stories of heroes and soldiers to examine the warrior ethic and to try to answer the question why, during the wars of the 20th century, Native men and women volunteered to serve in the U.S. military in numbers that far exceeded their proportion in the general population.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>These gripping stories from WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam weave a tapestry of themes\u2014the warrior ethic, prejudice and stereotypes, forced assimilation, poverty, cultural pride, redemptive acts and healing.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary uses historical footage, period photographs, Native music, personal diaries and interviews to reveal what it means to be \u201cogichidaa,\u201d one who protects and follows the way of the warrior. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>The film is free and open to the public. The screening will be hosted by the film\u2019s producer, Patricia Loew, associate professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison and producer at Wisconsin Public Television.<\/p>\n<p>A reception will follow, 8:30-10 p.m. at Wolves Den, 1201 E Franklin Ave, Minneapolis, MN.<\/p>\n<p>The Augsburg Native American Film Series (ANAFS) is committed to offering regional venues for Native American filmmakers and to build collaborative relationships between the local Native American community and other communities that honor the rich tradition of Native American film in Minnesota and the surrounding area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The American Indian Studies program kicks off its annual Film Series with Way of the Warrior on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. in the Science Building, room 123 on the Augsburg College campus.
