Buffalohead chairs the Department of American Indian, First Nations, and Indigenous Studies and is the co-editor, with Professor Elise Marubbio, of the book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentuckypress.com\/9780813136653\/native-americans-on-film\/\">Native Americans on Film: Conversations, Teaching, and Theory<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been teaching \u201cAmerican Indian in the Cinema\u201d for going on 30 years, and people have asked me, what\u2019s the solution to some of these problems?\u201d said Buffalohead. \u201cAnd it\u2019s contemporary representations. The big theme that you walk away from my course with is that most of our images are stuck in time, meaning that they\u2019re somewhere in the past. People don\u2019t see us as contemporary\u2014they see us as these images in the old West and very much stereotypes of plains or southwest Indians. They don\u2019t see the real diversity of Indigenous people in the Americas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conversation with anchor Aliyah Chavez also touched on expanding representations in television through shows like \u201cRutherford Falls\u201d and \u201cReservation Dogs,\u201d translation of major films into the Navajo and Comanche languages, and Professor Marubbio\u2019s work on representations of Native women in film.
