Augsburg College hosts youth wrestling club

Augsburg was featured on a WCCO-TV newscast in the Twin Cities market because the College is the location for the Minneapolis Wrestling Club, a group serving area youth.

Organizer Justin Benjamin said he wanted to establish a worthwhile club that less-fortunate kids could easily join without the worry of fees. Augsburg offered to the group its wrestling venue, which features motivational icons for young wrestlers, including plaques and awards.

Augsburg garners attention on Give to the Max Day

Augsburg College garnered media attention for its stellar achievement on Give to the Max Day 2014. The College raised about $434,000 and allowing the College to reach its goal of coming in first place among all Minnesota colleges and universities. Augsburg placed second overall among all Minnesota nonprofits. Learn about, read, and watch some of the news coverage below:

Andy Aoki answers WCCO ‘Good Question’ on ISIS

WCCOProfessor Andy Aoki spoke with WCCO-TV about the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, known as ISIS, for the news station’s Good Question. Aoki, who teaches in the College’s political science department, explained to television viewers that ISIS is an extreme militant group that has been disavowed by Al Qaeda. He commented that this relatively young organization is rare, in part, because unlike most of history’s other horrific killers, this group isn’t trying to hide any of its actions. “It’s rare to find a group like this that’s not even embarrassed. Even the Nazis were denying some of the things they did. If you look at some of the most horrific killers the last 30 or 40 years, they’ve got to be in the top 5 so far,” he told viewers. Watch “.”

Andy Aoki answers WCCO ‘Good Question’

WCCOPolitical Science Professor Andy Aoki spoke to WCCO’s John Lauritsen about whether economic sanctions are a strategy that governments can use to change behavior by others. Aoki told the “Good Question” reporter that actions by the United States to freeze assets of some Russian defense companies and to block financing of that country’s banks and energy companies could create enough pain over the long run that Russia will change its behavior. Augsburg-hosted spelling bee garners coverage on WCCO

WCCOThe Scripps Regional Spelling Bee organized and hosted by Augsburg College on March 15 was the focus of a WCCO news story. Mark Kivimaki, of Valley View Middle School in Edina, was the winner of the bee and will be sent by the College to Washington, D.C., to take part in the national competition.
