WHO and WHAT: Mason Jennings will explore the intersections of creative expression and peace in a special presentation as the featured musician of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum.

µþ´¡°ä°³Ò¸é°¿±«±·¶Ù:ÌýMason Jennings is the third artist to explore issues related to peace and the arts for the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. Previous artists Dessa, Omar Offendum, and Brother Ali were met with critical acclaim for pushing the boundaries on the discussion about the role in the world of musicians as peacemakers.

Jennings blends the insights of a poet, the political broadsides of a protest singer, and the broad musical eclecticism of a jazz musician with the passion of a rock and roller.

ABOUT THE FORUM: The Nobel Peace Prize Forum () is a premier international event designed to inspire peacemaking. Now in its 26th year, the NPPF celebrates the work of Peace Prize Laureates and deeply explores questions of peace and conflict. This year, the NPPF addresses issues in faith and peace, law and business, health and science, and global issues. The program is housed and coordinated by Augsburg College in partnership with the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the School of Public Health, and the five Norwegian Lutheran colleges of Augsburg, Augustana College (Sioux Falls, SD), Concordia College (Moorhead), Luther College (Decorah, IA) and St. Olaf College (Northfield). The Forum’s corporate sponsors include Thomson Reuters.

scholars2Last Friday, at the Peace Prize Forum (PPF) held at Concordia College (Moorhead), Augsburg juniors Willie Pinckney and Hannah Glusenkamp were introduced with the first class of Nobel Peace Prize Forum Peace Scholars.

This new PPF program selects two students from each of the five sponsoring colleges — Augsburg, Augustana (Sioux Falls), Concordia, Luther, and St. Olaf — who will travel together on a summer seminar, meet as a cohort during the following academic year, lead peace activities on their campuses and present at the next spring’s Peace Prize Forum. The goal of the Peace Scholars program is to develop student leaders inspired to careers or lifelong interests in world peace issues.

Pinckney transferred to Augsburg last year and is majoring in political science, with a history minor. Last fall he studied in Central America on a Center for Global Education (CGE) semester program. He is actively involved with local DFL (Democratic) campaigns and also serves as a track-and-field coach at Minneapolis South High School.

Glusenkamp is majoring in women’s studies, with minors in Spanish and religion. She has studied abroad in Central America and Mexico with CGE, has lived in Argentina, and plans to study in India in the coming fall semester. Last fall, she presented her study abroad experience on a panel at the CIEE International Education Conference.

On campus, Glusenkamp is active in student organizations promoting activism especially around gender issues. She hopes to work in public health, focusing on education and wellness for women and children of immigrant and refugee communities in the U.S.

Pinckney and Glusenkamp will travel to Guatemala in August on a 10-day intensive seminar sponsored by CGE to study Guatemala’s post-conflict experience with the 1996 Peace Accords. The seminar will also highlight themes and issues to be discussed in next year’s Peace Prize Forum.

Peace Scholars are chosen from applications and essays detailing interest in and goals for being a Peace Scholar. Political science professor Joe Underhill serves as coordinator and adviser to the Augsburg scholars.

deadlineThe 2008 Nobel Peace Prize Forum will take place March 7-8 at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. This year’s theme, “Striving for Peace: Investing in Community,” honors the work of Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank, winners of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

Yunus will give the keynote address to the forum on Saturday morning, March 8. The Grameen Bank, which he founded, extends low-cost loans to individuals in Bangladesh that have resulted in grassroots economic and social improvements. More than six million borrowers are now connected with the bank.

Other speakers include:

Greg Mortenson, founder of the Central Asia Institute and Pennies for Peace. He has established more than 60 schools in the most remote and impoverished areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. His work is chronicled in his best-selling book, “Three Cups of Tea.”

Jeffrey Sachs, director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University and author of “The End of Poverty,” is also special adviser to the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and president/cofounder of Millennium Promise Alliance, dedicated to ending extreme global poverty.

The PPF schedule on Friday and Saturday also includes a number of small-group sessions focusing on forum theme issues.

The $25 registration fee includes admission to all conference events, bus transportation, and meals. Augsburg students must register by Feb. 18 to reserve a spot at the PPF. Students may also register to stay in Concordia College student housing at no additional cost. Faculty, staff and students who want hotel housing must make their own reservations as directed on the registration web page. Register on line at: .

Muhammad Yunus will also speak at a public forum in Minneapolis on the evening of March 8 at the Humphrey Institute, co-sponsored with the Minnesota International Center. For information and tickets, go to www.micglobe.org. Persons who are attending the entire Peace Prize Forum in Moorhead will not be able to attend this evening event in Minneapolis.

The Forum is hosted by Concordia College in Moorhead and is sponsored by the five Nobel Peace Prize Forum colleges — Augsburg College, Augustana College (Sioux Falls, S.D.), Concordia College (Moorhead, Minn.), St. Olaf College, and Luther College.
