bloomingtonFor more than 25 years, Augsburg College has provided working adults with the opportunity to earn a private liberal arts degree and, in turn, change their lives.

This fall, adult learners who begin their college careers at Normandale Community College in Bloomington will have another model and location available to take that associate’s degree and finish their bachelor’s degree.

After launching an inaugural MBA cohort at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Bloomington in January, Augsburg is expanding its adult offerings in the southwest part of the Twin Cities.

The AA to BA completion program in Bloomington, however, will be different than the Augsburg for Adults program on the main Minneapolis campus. Students who have completed an AA degree from Normandale and completed the Minnesota transfer curriculum, will be able join a cohort-based program and complete their bachelor’s degree by taking two classes per quarter for nine trimesters. Students will take class on one weeknight per week. Students who begin classes this fall can finish their degrees by December 2011.

Normandale graduates will be able to earn one of three Bachelor of Arts degrees from Augsburg in organizational communications with a business minor, in business administration management, or in management with a communication minor.

The schedule for each option is predictable and there is a clear path toward graduation. The average class size will be between 10 and 15 students. The program has also been laid out in a way so that students will get full credit for the work that they have already accomplished.

The partnership with Normandale is a good one for Augsburg. Normandale, which is located less than one mile from St. Stephen, has experienced huge enrollment growth in recent years. Normandale is the state’s largest community college with more than 14,000 students.

The program also allows Augsburg to build on the good work that professors and instructors do at Normandale in preparing students to continue their education. A number of students with AA degrees from Normandale transfer to Augsburg on a regular basis, both in the Augsburg for Adults program and the traditional Day College.

The Bloomington location provides an opportunity for students to have Augsburg come to them. It is convenient for students who live or work on the Interstate 494 corridor. St. Stephen is located just south ofI-494 on France Ave.

Later this week, information sessions will be held at the Bloomington location for both AA to BA completion students and for Augsburg’s MBA and MAL programs. Information sessions for the AA to BA completion program and the MAL program will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 24. An info session for prospective MBA students will follow Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. All Bloomington sessions are held at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 8400 France Ave. S.

Why She Transferred

I transferred to Augsburg mainly for the small campus. I loved the idea of being in a small class so I could have one-on-one time with the professors. I think being able to get to know my professors helps me learn more. I also felt that being on a smaller campus would give me more opportunities to be involved with the school, which has been true so far. I have a job at the EC, I write for the Augsburgian (yearbook), for the office of marketing and communications, and this fall I will also write for the Echo (student newspaper).

Why She Loves Augsburg

What I like most about being an Auggie is being part of the little community here. I like knowing my professors and my classmates. When you are in a class with 15 other people, you get the chance to get to know one another, which makes class discussion more interesting. Being an Auggie means I am part of Augsburg, along with every other student, staff or faculty member. There isn’t an uncomfortable feeling of not knowing anyone because we are all Auggies, so we are all in the same community.

The major difference from my other school to Augsburg is the community feeling. At larger colleges, you could walk through campus and not know a single person. But at Augsburg, I am getting to know more and more people. I don’t feel like I’m just attending classes, I also feel like I’m part of the school.

Her Advice to Transfers

My advice is to take a tour of the college and talk with the Enrollment Center. It really helped me to talk with Financial Aid and Academic Advising before I transferred. I found out what to do, who I needed to talk to, and everything I needed to know about starting school at Augsburg. It was helpful to have someone to talk with so I didn’t feel like I was doing it all by myself.

One really important lesson I learned about transferring from one college to another is to pay attention to paperwork!
