This fall, Augsburg University’s MBA program will begin offering graduate business certificates in data analytics, entrepreneurship, finance, and strategic management.

Certificate programs are ideal for busy professionals who want to deepen or develop their skills in a specific area without committing to a full degree program. Each program consists of four core courses from the MBA curriculum. The courses prepare students for professional success using Harvard Business Review journal articles, case studies, simulations, and experiential learning.

Core courses in each program include:

  • Business analytics: quantitative methods, data analytics, data programming, predictive analytics
  • Entrepreneurship: marketing management, strategic management, entrepreneurship, innovation and design
  • Strategic management: financial management, business ethics, marketing management, strategic management
  • Finance: accounting for managers, managerial finance, investment theory and portfolio management, international finance

Each course will meet one night per week for eight weeks at the Hagfors Center on Augsburg’s Minneapolis campus. A certificate can be completed in as little as eight months.

Participants will take courses alongside MBA students and will be eligible to join Augsburg’s innovation speaker series. As part of the MBA curriculum, courses taken in a certificate program can also be applied toward degree completion for the program.

An undergraduate business degree is not required to enroll, but there may be prerequisite work for statistics and Excel. Visit the Augsburg MBA website for more information or to apply.

This past summer, I got the opportunity to study abroad in Paris, France. Through the Knowledge Exchange Institute, I enrolled in two classes that challenged me in the areas of European business and French society. Along with the classes, I had the experience of understanding French culture via walking tours of the city led by my professor.

Throughout my time, I also traveled to Versailles, Brussels, and London. Although all of these cities were great, Paris was the most enjoyable for me. Being challenged each and every day by new surroundings, culture, and lifestyle was an experience I’ll never forget and one I learned valuable lessons from.

Living in a Parisian flat near the center of the city, I was able to discover new things every day. Whether I’d decide to go see a major tourist attraction or a lesser-known spot, every day was an adventure. Attractions like the Louvre, Centre Pompidou, Musée d’Orsay, Montmarte, Notre Dame, and the Eiffel Tower were some of the most memorable. The Andy Warhol exhibit at the National Gallery was brilliant, and since Warhol is my favorite artist, I may have visited far too often. Meeting new people from every country imaginable was absolutely amazing, and I continue to stay in contact with them.

The photo I submitted for the Augsburg International Photo Contest is titled “Soccer at Le Sacré-Coeur.” I took the photo near the end of my trip while touring the area of Montmarte. This was one of the most impressive displays of talent I’ve ever seen.

Performing below the Basilica of Sacré-Coeur, the young man managed to balance on a gate while gracefully performing soccer ball routines choreographed to music, never allowing the ball to reach the ground. I can’t imagine the practice that went in to perfecting this talent, but it was paying off with extremely generous, cheering observers throughout the afternoon. The photo captures him spinning the ball on top of a pencil in his mouth, overlooking the awe-inspiring city of Paris.

MBAFor five years, Augsburg College has been helping professionals find their calling at work and in the world through its master’s program in business administration. Today, more than 270 students are enrolled in the program at three locations, and the Augsburg MBA continues to grow with offerings in the metro and a potential partnership with the Sinerghia Institute in Moscow. The Augsburg College MBA celebrates its success and looks toward an exciting future with a reception on Friday, Nov. 14 in the Oren Gateway Center.

The Augsburg MBA started in the fall of 2004. The faculty and administration approved the program with the stipulation that it would recruit four cohorts, or between 80 and 100 students, within the first three years. It seems the Twin Cities market was more than ready to accept a new MBA program; in fact, the first four cohorts arrived at Augsburg within four months of the program’s inception. The first 84 graduates commenced in 2006.

Augsburg added the MBA program to its Rochester campus in 2005, began offering classes at the downtown Minneapolis headquarters of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans in 2006, and plans to start a cohort in Bloomington in January 2009.

Recently Professor Magda Paleczny-Zapp, Chair of the Business Department, and Steven Zitnick, director of the Augsburg MBA, returned from a trip to Moscow where they met with Dr. Michail Ioffe, Rector of Sinerghia Institute and Dr. Larissa Kartashova, Vice Rector, to further develop the potential for the Augsburg MBA to be offered to Sinerghia students. This initiative will be brought to the both the Faculty Senate and the Graduate Academic Affairs Committee following coordination with the Center for Global Education.

meet_amanda Amanda transferred from Normandale Community College with AA degree. She is a mass communication and media writing major with a minor in business administration.

Why She Transferred

I transferred to Augsburg mainly for the small campus. I loved the idea of being in a small class so I could have one-on-one time with the professors. I think being able to get to know my professors helps me learn more. I also felt that being on a smaller campus would give me more opportunities to be involved with the school, which has been true so far. I have a job at the EC, I write for the Augsburgian (yearbook), for the office of marketing and communications, and this fall I will also write for the Echo (student newspaper).

Why She Loves Augsburg

What I like most about being an Auggie is being part of the little community here. I like knowing my professors and my classmates. When you are in a class with 15 other people, you get the chance to get to know one another, which makes class discussion more interesting. Being an Auggie means I am part of Augsburg, along with every other student, staff or faculty member. There isn’t an uncomfortable feeling of not knowing anyone because we are all Auggies, so we are all in the same community.

The major difference from my other school to Augsburg is the community feeling. At larger colleges, you could walk through campus and not know a single person. But at Augsburg, I am getting to know more and more people. I don’t feel like I’m just attending classes, I also feel like I’m part of the school.

Her Advice to Transfers

My advice is to take a tour of the college and talk with the Enrollment Center. It really helped me to talk with Financial Aid and Academic Advising before I transferred. I found out what to do, who I needed to talk to, and everything I needed to know about starting school at Augsburg. It was helpful to have someone to talk with so I didn’t feel like I was doing it all by myself.

One really important lesson I learned about transferring from one college to another is to pay attention to paperwork!

Before coming to the United States in 1970, associate professor and finance coordinator Ashok Kapoor worked at the American Embassy in his home country of India. “Both my cultural and religious background allows me to bring a very different perspective to issues of the day that we discuss both among colleagues and with our students.”

“Having faculty of diverse backgrounds is important to the richness of the academic programming offered in our department,” says assistant professor Fekri Meziou, Tunisian by birth. In his international marketing course, for example, students analyze the challenges of marketing products and services in different regions around the world. “This course can only be taught by someone who has traveled extensively and has immersed himself/herself during an extended stay in the life of the foreign countries.”

“In the current context of globalization,” Kapoor says, “my international experience comes in handy in all my classes … My work experience overseas provides many examples to my students and helps them keep an open perspective leading to better decisions both professionally and in their personal lives.”

Associate professor and department chair Magdalena Paleczny-Zapp was born and raised in Krakow, Poland, and taught in several European institutions before coming to Augsburg. “Students leave the place more open-minded than the day they came,” she asserts.

Senior Dulce Monterrubio, a native of Mexico City, credits Zapp’s own experience as an international business consultant with helping her understand that “being an international student here at Augsburg was just the first step, but that successfully adapting to a second, third, or fourth culture would be what truly would make me the international educator/professional I wanted to become.” Dulce is using her cultural experiences, which include studying abroad in Spain, in her current role as a program assistant in Augsburg’s Center for Global Education.

“When I got here [in 1990] and saw the amount of diversity in the department, I wondered if we would all work well together,” remembers associate professor Lori Lohman, who is a self-described Midwestern Protestant. “In a short period of time it became apparent to me that this would be the best place I would ever work. My co-workers are exceptional. We support each other. We respect and value our differences.”

“For me, it would be hard to work in a department where only one culture was represented,” says Zapp. “We bring to the class very different worlds. We represent different cultures, different countries, different religious beliefs … The benefits are immeasurable.”

The Department of Business Administration has 24 full-time faculty, more than 35 part-time faculty, teaching over 700 undergraduate and 300 graduate students.
