philanthropyLast week, Augsburg welcomed more than 200 attendees to the first annual Celebration of Philanthropy event. In this interactive event, guests connected with each other, had their photo taken with Auggie Eagle, told us why they support Augsburg in the video booth and on a large display board, and met student researchers. The evening concluded with dessert and discussion and the presentation of a showing how Auggies and donors are changing the world.

This event is the first in a series of donor recognition events that will be held in the 2011-12 academic year. The next event will be a holiday dinner hosted by Paul and Abigail Pribbenow in conjunction with Advent Vespers in December, followed by the annual scholarship brunch in April. The series also includes a September boat cruise on Lake Minnetonka for young alumni donors and a celebration of student philanthropic achievement with a class party in April for the class that wins the “Feed the Pig” contest. These invitation-only events are designed to recognize the many levels of giving from alumni, friends of Augsburg, and current faculty, staff, and students.

Thank you to all our donors! You truly are helping Auggies change the world.

auggie_signRecently one of Augsburg’s most visible symbols got a major facelift. The Augsburg “A” and “Augsburg” signs atop Mortensen Hall were replaced in January with updated LED logos that serve as a beacon to commuters who pass the campus daily on Interstate 94 and to residents of the Twin Cities.

Julie Edstrom, Augsburg’s vice president of enrollment management, says that even though Augsburg is located along a major freeway in the state’s largest city, the College hasn’t been very visible to the tens of thousands of people driving by every day. “I’m always surprised when people who live right here in the Twin Cities ask me where Augsburg is located,” Edstrom says. She adds that the cost of advertising on metro area billboards, buses, and skyways is a significant investment. For Augsburg, Edstrom believes taking advantage of Augsburg’s location and proximity to downtown Minneapolis with prominent, attractive signage that can be seen from all directions, day or night, will pay big dividends for visibility and name recognition for the College.

“It’s like having our own billboard year ’round.”

President Pribbenow agrees. “It is a major marketing investment that we believe offers us the greatest return for visibility, pride of place, and quite honestly as a marker for folks to find our campus,” he says.

In the coming week, Auggie Eagle will sponsor a “Where Was This Photo Taken?” contest on Inside Augsburg. Using a photo and its accompanying clues, Auggies will determine the precise location where pictures of our new Augsburg signs were taken. The Auggie who gets the most correct answers will win a $50 gift certificate to the Augsburg bookstore. NOTE: if there is a tie for most correct answers, a drawing will be held to determine the winner.

See the old come down and the new one go up.

Become a fan of the sign on .

Augsburg Sign by the Numbers:

5′ – height of the “A” in Augsburg

30′ – width of the word “Augsburg” facing the freeway and the quad

10′ x 36′ – dimensions of the long sign panels with the word “Augsburg”

10′ x 26′ – dimensions of the shorter sign panels featuring the “Augsburg College” logo

295 – number of stairs from the ground floor to the roof of Mortensen. But most people just take the elevator.

vento_auggiesEarly this spring, some future Auggies started on their path to college when they were adopted by the Augsburg College admissions staff and by Auggie Eagle.

Anne Gardner, a first grade teacher at Bruce F. Vento Elementary in St. Paul, contacted Carrie Carroll, assistant vice president of admissions asking if Augsburg would be a benefactor to her class and adopt her first graders.

“We agreed to sponsor her classroom and the connection has blossomed,” said Carroll.

Last year, each class at Vento Elementary adopted a college or university to represent his or her classroom. Gardner chose Augsburg in part because her son, Sam Smith, is a student at the College. Students learned about Augsburg, including the fight song. Carroll said the students have Augsburg postcards and pictures in their classroom and they each made their own Auggie pennant to take home for the summer.

The admissions staff hosted Gardner’s class at the end of April. The students were greeted by Auggie Eagle and had photos taken with the mascot. They played games, took a campus tour, sat in on a sample class, met President Pribbenow, and ate lunch on campus.

Carroll said the students had such a good time at Augsburg that they asked the staff to visit their school to return the favor. In early June, several admissions counselors and Auggie Eagle spent the day at Bruce Vento.

The staff was treated with a “Go Auggies” cheer and heard students’ poetry. The staff and Auggie Eagle took a tour of the school, made and flew kites with the students, and ate lunch together. Carroll said several of the students brought their Auggie backpacks to school. “It was very cute to see them all lined up in their coatroom,” she added.

Vento Elementary is a Title I school serving students from diverse backgrounds. Approximately 70 percent of its students are learning English as a second language and 94 percent qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school’s mission is to educate “every student, without exception and without excuse, to standard or above in reading, writing, math and science in preparation for college.”

“This endeavor goes beyond academics,” Gardner says. “It gives hope to our students and families and teaches our students to set goals for their futures.”

Gardner says her hope is that students will become inspired to set college as one of their goals through this program.

auggieHey Auggies! I’m Auggie Eagle. You might have seen me hanging around at Augsburg, usually I show up at football games and other athletic events. I think the last time I was around was for the Homecoming pep rally. I know…it’s been a while.

Lately I’m spending a lot of time in the nest because I’ve got a serious case of the bird flu. The last couple weeks I have been watching and listening to the Auggie men’s soccer team and keeping up with all the teams on the .

Oh, and the last couple of days I’ve been reading about Rhodes Scholar, Brian Krohn. I hear you are having “Brian Krohn Day” next Thursday? I might just show up sporting a lab coat!

I’ve also been spending a lot of time on Facebook. It is so addictive! I like posting photos, poking my friends and writing on their walls. The problem is that I’m new to Facebook, and want to get more friends. I would love it if you’d “friend” me. I think that’s what they call it, right? As of November 26, I have 68 friends, but my goal is to have more than JK. She has almost 1,000!

I definitely want to have more friends than the St. Thomas Tommie, and he has 629 friends. We beat them in football, and I know I could have at least as many friends as he has.

Post a message on my or send me a photo. And come back and check out my page from time to time to see what I’m up to and what the Auggies are doing.
