Howling Bird Press is the literary publishing house of the Augsburg MFA in Creative Writing program and an optional career concentration for students who want to gain real experience in the world of\u00a0 publishing.<\/p>\n
Through a two-course, instructor-led publishing sequence, students work together to run a functioning literary press from the inside out. With guidance from their publishing mentor, MFA writers take on every aspect of the publishing process\u2014including acquisitions, editing, graphic design, production, marketing, distribution, and promotion.<\/p>\n
This immersive, hands-on experience helps students build practical skills, professional confidence, and a deeper understanding of how literary work moves from manuscript to publication. It also offers a meaningful opportunity to champion new voices and participate in a wider community of writers, editors, and readers.<\/p>\n
Each year, Howling Bird Press sponsors the Howling Bird Book Prize, a national contest that celebrates outstanding work across genres and culminates in the publication of a winning book.<\/p>\n
