If one or both of your parents\/guardians has an international degree, please contact McNair staff <i>before you submit your application.<\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><i>How do I know if I\u2019m considered low-income?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you receive full Pell funding, you most likely qualify as low-income; HOWEVER, you will want to verify by following these instructions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On your parents\u2019 most recent tax return, find the \u2018taxable income\u2019 amount (Line 15 on Form 1040);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/ed-offices\/ope\/trio\/federal-trio-programs-current-year-low-income-levels\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal TRIO Programs Current-Year Low-Income Levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, identify the total number of persons in your household (including yourself) under the \u2018Size of Family Unit\u2019 column and if the amount listed for this number is <\/span><b>greater than<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your parents\u2019 taxable income, <\/span><b>you qualify as low-income<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b><i>What if I file my own taxes?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You still need to refer to your parents\u2019 tax information UNLESS the following exceptions apply: a) You\u2019re 24 years of age or older; b) You\u2019re married and\/or you have dependents other than a spouse for which you provide more than half of their support; c) You are a veteran or active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces; d) You\u2019re legally emancipated, parents are deceased, or you were granted a FAFSA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finaid.org\/educators\/pj\/dependencyoverrides\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dependency override<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (note: this must be approved by the Financial Aid office and you may be required to provide documentation with your application).<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other exceptions may apply; please contact McNair staff if your circumstance does not fit into any of the above mentioned categories.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More information on dependent vs. independent status, visit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\/filling-out\/dependency\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\/filling-out\/dependency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b><i><\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>What if I can\u2019t access my parents\u2019 tax records?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A copy of your FAFSA submission might be sufficient documentation; however, we may ask that you permit us to verify low-income status with the Financial Aid office on your behalf.<\/span><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Additionally, as a McNair Scholar you must:<\/h2>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Have the desire and motivation to attend and be successful in graduate school (preference given to applicants that are considering Ph.D. or doctoral studies)<\/li>\n<li>Conduct intensive research at Augsburg or off-campus during the summer (cannot be employed or taking summer coursework during research).<\/li>\n<li>Attend a two-day McNair retreat.<\/li>\n<li>Attend McNair seminars covering the graduate school experience, application process, and GRE preparation<\/li>\n<li>Take a tuition-free 2 academic credit spring course, <em>Research in the Disciplines.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Apply for at least three graduate programs during the fall semester of your senior year.<\/li>\n<li>Be open-minded.<\/li>\n<li>Be positive.<\/li>\n<li>Be a team player.<\/li>\n<li>Seek and provide constructive feedback.<\/li>\n<li>Be supportive of your peers.<\/li>\n<li>Be willing to participate in and contribute your unique self to a rich learning community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NOTE: The McNair Program generally does not admit students interested in pursuing professional degrees (JD, MBA, MD and other health-related fields).
