On-campus employment does not require the authorization or updates to the SEVIS record. While Augsburg will support international students in finding employment, <strong>e<\/strong><strong>mployment is NOT GUARANTEED.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rules and regulations to consider:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students in their second, third and fourth year will be prioritized for on-campus employment.<\/li>\n<li>Students receiving full scholarships (ELCA and other) will have limited work opportunities. Other students will be prioritized.<\/li>\n<li>Students need to be engaged in a full course of study to be employed.<\/li>\n<li>Eligible students can work no more than 20 hours per week (if assigned or available), and are allowed no more than 2 on-campus positions.<\/li>\n<li>On-campus employment\u00a0is not available after the student&#8217;s program end date.<\/li>\n<li>Students who have completed a full academic year at Augsburg can also seek CPT (see section under).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Also, students need to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>show their SSN number or apply for one immediately after an on-campus job has been secured.<\/li>\n<li>have an American bank account for deposits.<\/li>\n<li>pay taxes when employed in the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To look for current on-campus job opportunities, visit <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/careers.smartrecruiters.com\/AugsburgUniversity-MinneapolisMN\/student-positions\">On-Campus Student Jobs<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Augsburg Bookstore or Dining Services are considered on-campus employment but are not listed in the link above.<\/p>\n<p>For Information on Social Security Number Card, please check out our section on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/isss\/f1\/social-security-card\/\"><strong>Social Security Number.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Off-campus Employment or internship experiences<\/h3>\n<p>F-1 students may be authorized and documented in SEVIS to work or internship experiences off campus related to their major field of study once they have been in F-1 Status for one year and studied full time. Before you participate in any kind of off-campus employment, volunteering, or internships, please consult an international student advisor. See the types of off campus\u00a0opportunities below.<\/p>\n<h3>Curricular Practical Training (CPT)<\/h3>\n<p>Once<strong> undergraduate students<\/strong> have completed one year of full time enrollment, and the F-1 Status is maintained, students can apply for <strong>Curricular Practical Training (CPT<\/strong>,) which is temporary employment or training <em>within their major field of study and integral to the curriculum<\/em>. For <strong>graduate students<\/strong>\u00a0the rules are slightly different, so please see below.<\/p>\n<p>Both undergraduate and graduate students should meet with your international student advisor for more details. You must receive ISSS approval before and a new I-20 before you begin employment.<\/p>\n<p>We work closely with the Strommen Center for Meaningful Work as they serve as the hub for all internships on campus. Please be aware that you can not start training, orientation, or work before you complete your paperwork with Strommen and ISSS and have your new I-20 in hand.<\/p>\n<h3>Economic Hardship Work Authorization<\/h3>\n<p>In very rare circumstances, students can be authorized for <strong>Economic Hardship Work Authorization<\/strong>. A new I-20 will be generated showing CPT authorization on page 2. This I-20 serves as the legal proof of your off-campus employment eligibility. Make sure to check the time period in which you are authorized (typically the current enrolled semester.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 6:<\/strong> <strong>Start your internship.<\/strong> Due to government regulations, you must have the CPT authorization in hand <em><strong>BEFORE<\/strong><\/em> you begin your CPT experience (including training and orientation).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>GRADUATE FORMS &#8211; CPT<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24558 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/isss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-20-at-10.16.22-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"138\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/isss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-20-at-10.16.22-AM.png 372w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/isss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-20-at-10.16.22-AM-280x300.png 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong>: <strong>View the<\/strong>: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Mya_42XjNhHQJI50nq0DAEPh31MY3qad\/view?usp=sharing\">CPT: Curricular Practical Training Presentation<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong>: <strong>Meet with your faculty advisor<\/strong> to ensure you are ready and eligible for CPT<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3: Set up an in-person meeting\u00a0with the ISSS office<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4: <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/19K_UGMMSeL0-V8EWZEaKlekE5mniGKNx\/view\">Complete the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Request and Verification Form<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5: Fill in and complete your <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdozlDXLwa_QGgmSrf6uFXvGvYbmIRLVKYi_vNXyAdlyJVJiQ\/viewform\">Internship Form<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NOTE: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In certain instances, Augsburg University will allow international graduate students to seek CPT opportunities during their first and second semester of their program to further the academic objectives of the degree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To authorize CPT during the two first semesters, a recommendation from the academic\/faculty advisor will be required, including a written approval confirming that the CPT opportunity will deepen the students\u2019 learning outcomes, and that the experience will be an integral part of the established curriculum.\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;Day one&#8221; CPT is not guaranteed and has increased program and reporting requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The students&#8217; readiness and eligibility will be determined by the faculty\/academic advisor and the PDSO at Augsburg University,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and will depend on the graduate program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For students not eligible (for first and second semester CPT), CPT can be authorized after the second semester has been completed.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Post &#8211; Completion Employment or Internships<\/h2>\n<h3>Optional Practical Training (OPT)<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If you plan to do any Optional Practical Training after graduating or are not sure, we recommend you come in at least 4 months in advance of your program end date (the last day of your final semester) to talk through the process, understand how to apply and the timeline. OPT is a benefit of your F-1 status and you have the opportunity to work in your major field of study. ISSS will offer OPT sessions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We highly recommend attending one of those sessions, and then set up a one to one meeting with an ISSS Advisor to begin the process to apply. You must be doing your OPT in the major field of study that is a STEM Eligible Field and be working with an E-Verified employer. For more information, please speak with your advisor.
