Read on to find out about the program, benefits, and membership.<\/p>\n<p>The consortium was formed with the goal of providing a cross-cultural and academic study abroad opportunity for BSW students that also met requirements set forth by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). \u00a0The program is rooted in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Social justice and transformational learning<\/li>\n<li>Experiential pedagogy<\/li>\n<li>Global and intercultural social work\/social welfare context immersion<\/li>\n<li>Preparing culturally competent professionals to serve diverse populations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The program\u2019s inaugural semester was in 2003.\u00a0 The program won CSWE\u2019s Global Commission \u201cPartners in International Social Work Education Award\u201d in 2006, and \u201cBest Practices in International Education International Exchange Award\u201d from the Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education (NASPA) in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Read on for more information \u2013 or check out our <a title=\"Social Work Consortium Webinar\" href=\"https:\/\/web.augsburg.edu\/global\/SWKwebinar.wmv\">webinar presentation<\/a> on the program and consortium.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Courses<\/h2>\n<p>Students choose four of the following four-credit courses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Social Work 295: Comparative Social Policy<\/li>\n<li>Social Work 316: Work with Groups and Families: Theory and Practice<\/li>\n<li>Social Work 317: Social Work Fieldwork<\/li>\n<li>Social Work 294: International Social Welfare: The Mexican Context<\/li>\n<li>Spanish language: Student can choose one of 18 different courses taught by a local language school partner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Full program syllabi are available at our Global Gateway <a href=\"https:\/\/studyabroad.augsburg.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=21254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Work Application page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0Management Roles<\/h2>\n<p>The program is managed by the consortium; faculty from each member and affiliate institution contributes to curricular design, delivery, oversight, and evaluation. CGE co-manages the program with the consortium, and a\u00a0visiting faculty member serves as instructor for three of the social work courses taught in Mexico. CGE faculty teach \u201cThe Mexican Context course,\u201d and most students enroll in an additional Spanish course at a local language school. CGE has been a provider of education abroad programs in Cuernavaca since 1979 and is responsible for the coordination of logistics (both pre-departure and in-country).\u00a0 CGE staff on site, with extensive local knowledge and contacts, also work with faculty and students to select fieldwork placements, vet homestay families, and plan program-sponsored excursions.<\/p>\n<h2>Highlights<\/h2>\n<p>Program elements include diverse guest speakers, excursions, and community-based learning experiences.\u00a0 Students may:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Engage in social work fieldwork placements<\/li>\n<li>Meet with a representative of the Afro-Mexican community<\/li>\n<li>Visit a natural health clinic to meet with a traditional healer<\/li>\n<li>Engage with a representative from the Mexican Department of Family Services<\/li>\n<li>Meet with teachers and students at a pre-school for low-income students<\/li>\n<li>Travel to an assembly plant to learn about employment\/labor and meet with a manager<\/li>\n<li>Listen to a panel discussion with representatives of major political parties<\/li>\n<li>Participate in urban and rural home stays<\/li>\n<li>Listen to a panel on gender and sexuality<\/li>\n<li>A two-week exchange with the National School of Social Work at the UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico). \u00a0Students spend time at UNAM in Mexico City and observe students\u2019 field placements. \u00a0UNAM students also spend a week at CGE\u2019s campus to participate in the program\u2019s classes and components.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Interested in Becoming a Part of the BSW Consortium in Mexico?<\/h2>\n<p>We welcome interest in joining the consortium!\u00a0To inquire about becoming a member or affiliate, please contact Margaret Anderson at the Center for Global Education at 612-330-1685 or<a href=\"&#109;&#97;&#x69;l&#116;&#x6f;&#x3a;a&#110;&#x64;&#x65;r&#115;&#x6f;4&#64;&#x61;&#x75;g&#115;&#x62;&#x75;r&#103;&#x2e;e&#100;&#x75;\">a&#110;&#100;&#101;&#x72;&#x73;&#x6f;4&#64;&#97;&#117;&#x67;&#x73;&#x62;&#x75;rg&#46;&#101;&#x64;&#x75;<\/a>. \u00a0By-laws and samples of full consortium and affiliate contracts are available for review.<\/p>\n<h3>Full Membership<\/h3>\n<p><em>Becoming a Consortium Member involves<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any interested schools must arrange an interview with a social work professor from one of the Consortium schools who will determine whether or not they think the school\u2019s curriculum and the program are a good fit.<\/li>\n<li>The social work department at the interested school should consult with their study abroad office on any requirements or restrictions for program approval.<\/li>\n<li>If approved by the Consortium, their social work department and study abroad office must sign an agreement form and return it to CGE. The study abroad office is welcome to speak with the Coordinator of Academic Programs Abroad at CGE in order to understand various policies, procedures, and program elements they may have questions about.<\/li>\n<li>Identify a primary representative from the social work faculty who actively participates in the governance of the Consortium (teleconferencing is available).<\/li>\n<li>Member faculty may attend semi-annual managing committee meetings (teleconference option is available) and request to be voting members.<\/li>\n<li>Program courses must be offered through the home institution as a part of the regular course offerings. CGE will report grades to primary representative, who will be responsible for reporting to the home school registrar.<\/li>\n<li>All institutional and state\/federal financial\u00a0should be transferable since all courses should be offered and accredited by the home institution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Benefits of Consortium Membership<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Guaranteed students spots on the program.<\/li>\n<li>Students pay home tuition rate. \u00a0Please note that the consortium strives to balance membership between lower-tuition and higher-tuition schools in order to serve diverse student while maintaining financial solvency.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to fully participate in the design, delivery, and evaluation of the program.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty members from consortium schools are given preference when they apply to be a visiting member.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Affiliate Membership<\/h3>\n<p>Affiliate member are colleges and universities with CSWE-accredited BSW majors whose curriculum fits closely with the curriculum of the Social Work in a Latin American Context Consortium schools and the semester program in Mexico.\u00a0 Schools are pre-approved so that they can encourage their students to apply to the program without having to complete special paperwork.<\/p>\n<p><em>Becoming an Affiliate Member involve<\/em>s:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any interested schools must arrange an interview with a social work professor from one of the consortium schools who will determine whether or not they think the school\u2019s curriculum and the program are a good fit.<\/li>\n<li>The social work department at the interested school should consult with their study abroad office on any requirements or restrictions for program approval.<\/li>\n<li>If approved, their social work department and study abroad office must sign an agreement form and return it to CGE.
