  {"id":48917,"date":"2022-12-07T21:47:44","date_gmt":"2022-12-07T21:47:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/?p=48917"},"modified":"2022-12-07T21:48:38","modified_gmt":"2022-12-07T21:48:38","slug":"lewis-nelson-00-encourages-you-to-get-involved-with-giving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/2022\/12\/07\/lewis-nelson-00-encourages-you-to-get-involved-with-giving\/","title":{"rendered":"Lewis Nelson \u201900 Encourages You to Get Involved with Giving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over one thousand miles away Lewis Nelson \u201900, a history major, sat in front of a map in his office, which was posted behind him on the wall, meticulously pinned with various places he had visited.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/12\/image_6483441-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-48919\" src=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/12\/image_6483441-1-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lewis Nelson kneels on a football field with football and a helmet posing for the photo\" width=\"175\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/12\/image_6483441-1-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/12\/image_6483441-1-768x1060.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/12\/image_6483441-1-742x1024.jpg 742w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/12\/image_6483441-1.jpg 1159w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Graduating high school from a small town in Wisconsin, Nelson reflected on why he initially chose Augsburg University\u2013because of the urban environment, sense of community, and football.<\/p>\n<p>But during his freshman year, Nelson, like many freshmen, felt the struggle of adapting to the new environment at first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then, I started meeting more people,\u201d Nelson said. \u201cI began to participate in activities and student organizations, and I just got more involved on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His pitch rose with excitement, speaking about how he became an orientation leader and joined the Augsburg Student Activity Council.<\/p>\n<p>Once he was fully immersed in the culture, Nelson said he was enamored by Augsburg\u2019s diversity, and through it he learned that he could get along with anybody from anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Not long after graduation, Nelson joined the U.S. Army, where his experience at Augsburg gave him a leg up on his peers, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAugsburg helped me cultivate vital skills such as critical thinking and leadership,\u201d said Nelson. \u201cSkills that continue to serve me today, and that\u2019s why I give.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/12\/image_6487327-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-48918 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/12\/image_6487327-2-300x179.jpg\" alt=\"Lewis in a cap and gown holding his diploma poses for a photo under a tree with his mom.\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/12\/image_6487327-2-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/12\/image_6487327-2-768x458.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/12\/image_6487327-2-1024x611.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Nelson\u2019s giving journey began when he received a call from a student about the Augsburg Fund.
