In 2023, she became the program coordinator of the Health Commons and the Director of the BSN program.

Katie’s research experience is primarily with qualitative methods and critical discourse analysis. As a PhD student, she was able to learn from experts in qualitative methodology and worked on various projects in pediatrics and public health. Her dissertation was a critical discourse analysis of the communication between nurse midwives and pregnant people on risk and responsibility. Katie was recently the lead investigator of a study entitled “Evaluating student learning at the Augsburg Health Commons,” which evaluated what the nursing students were learning from their experiences at the Health Commons. She was also a sub-investigator on a research project exploring barriers and facilitators of health for those with housing instability.

Currently, Katie teaches Nursing Research (Nur 520) in the Masters of Arts in Nursing program. She also teaches Paradigms in Nursing: Evidence-Based Practice and Theory (Nur 306) and Culture, Context, and Family-Centered Care (Nur 403) in the BSN Completion program. She also advises students in their doctoral studies as they complete their final projects.

Katie’s clinical experience began right after graduation from a post-baccalaureate nursing program when she followed her passion for gender-related health and obstetrics to the Birthplace at University of Minnesota Health (UMMC), Riverside campus. She began as a postpartum and nursery nurse and soon became a labor and delivery nurse. After completing the Midwifery program at the University of Minnesota, she began working as a full-scope certified nurse midwife for the University of Minnesota Physicians at UMMC.
